Adjustment disorder is an overreaction to a stressful or traumatic event. A relationship problem, job difficulty, health transition, or any other negative or positive life occurrence are all examples of stressors. A stressor can be a single occurrence (such as a horrible breakup) or multiple events (such as job problems, school difficulties, or financial difficulties). Stressors can affect an individual, a family, or a whole community (such as those affected by a natural catastrophe). Stressors might be recurrent (such as seasonal business) or associated with certain “milestone” occasions (such as going to school, getting married, or retiring). Adjustment disorder is a type of sadness that occurs in response to a change in circumstance. It's also known as situational depression. Symptoms fade with time. Talk therapy is the most common treatment. Fortunately, help is on the way. Call us for a free assessment.
