What is an adjustment disorder?
An adjustment disorder is a mental health condition that can occur after a person experiences a stressful event or situation. The stress may be caused by an event that is feared, such as an illness, death, job loss, divorce, or moving to a new home. People with an adjustment disorder may have difficulty coping with the stress and may develop symptoms. Symptoms may include feeling sad or hopeless, having trouble sleeping, or feeling angry, anxious, and irritable. Psychotherapy is an effective tool for treatment of adjustment disorders.
Treatment for an Adjustment Disorder
At Valenta Mental Health, we use a variety of treatment methods and modalities to help you recover from an adjustment disorder. We can assist you in obtaining long-term coping strategies and resources for dealing with your distress. After an assessment with one of our skilled clinicians, our treatment team will recommend an appropriate course of treatment.
Treatment for an adjustment disorder may include individual and group therapy, and integration of skills from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), and other evidence-based modalities.
Individual therapy allows you to dive deeper into the thoughts and emotions, and to examine them with a professional to identify themes or distortions that result in increased symptoms. Once identified, you will receive support to explore and challenge these thoughts in a way that encourage congruency in your beliefs, values, and behaviors.
Group therapy is a wonderful opportunity to share your journey with others who are on a similar path. Group members encourage one another and offer healthy support as they share experiences and grow together. Some groups are skills-based and focus on learning new things to immediately apply; other groups are patient led and create space for group members to process emotions in an open structure.
