Valenta (“to make powerful”) was established in 2006 to provide world class care and treatment available to assist individuals in their recovery from eating disorders. Valenta has expanded its scope of practice and expertise to include: Treatment and Recovery for Eating Disorders, Treatment and Recovery for Depression and Anxiety, Healthy Student Program designed for young adults, and Outpatient Nutritional Services.
To best facilitate recovery, a bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach most appropriately addresses the multifaceted illnesses. All Valenta programs content is focused on providing the patient with opportunities for recovery and healing of body, mind, soul and relationships.
Dr. Mar is the founder and Medical Director at the Valenta Eating Disorder Program for Anorexia and Bulimia. Since 1999, Dr. Mar has focused his medical career on the evaluation, treatment and causes of eating disorders.
Dr. Mar believes that people with eating disorders need thorough medical care and skilled therapy for the multifaceted bio-psycho-social issues associated with eating disorders. Dr. Mar’s medical credentials are extensive with board certifications (specialization) in three specific areas of expertise: Board Certified in Pediatrics, Adult Psychiatry, and Child/Adolescent Psychiatry. Dr. Mar earned his MD from Dartmouth Medical School and his BA from Stanford University. He completed his residency at the University of Utah’s distinguished Triple Board program.
Eating disorders are dangerous, life threatening, and complicated illnesses that require professional assistance, yet many people remain confused, uncertain, and overwhelmed. The Valenta programs integrate the most effective medical and therapeutic treatments available to assist in the recovery from eating disorders and mental illness and to facilitate the patient transitioning back to healthy living with the necessary skills and knowledge to cope, challenge, and flourish in life. Most important, and in contrast to many programs, is Valenta’s approach of building and restoring health in addition to removing the symptoms of the mental Illness.
Valenta provides three stages (PHP, IOP, Aftercare) of care to meet the individual needs of each patient. Each stage addresses distinct concerns and provides different degrees of structure and support as patients grow in their recovery. These stages are specifically helpful with integrating treatment concepts and practices into your living and school or work environment. An advantage of our level of care is that the patient is able to return home at night and is at home each weekend. This allows the patient to work closely with the treatment team while immediately practicing the new skills, tools, and recovery concepts in their real world environments. The care Valenta provides is consistent with the American Psychiatric Associations Practice Guideline for the Treatment of Patients with Eating Disorders; the most comprehensive guidelines currently available for the treatment of eating disorders.
The program schedule is designed with two separate tracks for adults and adolescents, and is run Mondays through Fridays for 8 hours. Please check out our typical day.
At Valenta we have a motto, Adverto Vitum. It means to ‘turn toward’ or to ‘choose’ life. At its core, we believe this wish for life is at the root of every individual’s recovery. It is our mission to provide you the support and resources to empower your recovery as you make this choice and seek to restore health.
Here are a few testimonials from parents as well as patients who chose to turn toward life
and graduated from the Valenta Eating Disorder Program:
“My Family and I are thankful that we found Valenta”
“Three years ago we discovered that our 16-year old daughter had been living with an eating disorder. This was a tragic discovery to the entire family discovering that our daughter had been living this life all alone. After months of counseling and aggressive treatment with the staff at Valenta, we began to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Our daughter was returning to us and beginning to live her life again. Through extensive counseling, both group and family, we have discovered that eating disorders never completely go away, but with the help of the very qualified staff at Valenta, we now know that our daughter is in good hands and will be successful in the skills she has learned from the staff at Valenta”
“Valenta told us it was ‘required’ to attend family sessions every week while our daughter went through the Valenta program”
“They demonstrated their commitment to their medical treatment and to our daughter’s recovery that we had not experienced elsewhere. Because of the family sessions we now have the tools and knowledge that an eating disorder is an illness, and not a choice, this knowledge helps us every day as we continue to recover as a family. Thank you Valenta!”
“I learned that my negative feelings are extremely painful but they will pass”
“Allow me to be blunt, this is the best eating disorder program out there by far (and I’ve been to a few)! I am a recovering eating disorder patient, living a “normal” life like I have never known before. My relationships are better, life is better (not to mention my health) and I finally feel at peace about who I am and where I am going. HUGE THANKS to the Valenta staff for helping me through the past 6 weeks. At times, it was a rough road, but now I fell like a much stronger person. I thank each and every one of you for helping helping me turn my life in the right direction. The staff at Valenta, especially Dr. Mar, saw my determination and they helped me to get up and stand on both feet. Now I am strong, I have my power back. I have a life and I can do anything I want.”
“Valenta helped me become comfortable in my own skin, and with the relationships and challenging situations around me. Going through program brought me closer to my family, friends, and most importantly myself.
